Finally?!?

Finally, a physician not only heard what I said - she LISTENED!

After years of being shrugged off by physician after physician with the "wait and see" mentality, even declining to do labs, the PCP (Primary Care Physician) I started seeing earlier this year (LOVE her!) didn't hesitate to do blood work for hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia at my first visit. The results were SHOCKING. Although I knew they would be abnormal (too high), the numbers that came back were astounding.

My PCP also didn't hesitate to refer me to endocrinology for consult and treatment. As the endocrinologist is a specialist the first available appointment had been 3 months* out and I finally saw him last Friday.

The endocrinologist ordered labs and - completely unexpectedly - a thyroid ultrasound. Apparently my thyroid gland has an abnormal shape so there is a possibility of nodules causing that.

The endocrinologist also referred me out for surgical consult and surgery scheduling on the three remaining parathyroid glands I have. (One parathyroid gland was removed in ~2009.)

Between the hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia, and potentially hypothyroidism, the endocrinologist has taken various symptoms I have been complaining about for years - most of which, I thought, have seemingly nothing to do with other symptomology - and made sense of it all.

The thyroid ultrasound is tomorrow morning (one of the perks of sitting next to the ultrasound scheduler!) and hopefully then I will be able to see the remaining lab results tomorrow.

F I N A L L Y !

*Not unusual for a specialist like this. The OB/GYN + Perinatology clinic I work in is very similar. Obviously OB and Perinatology patients are scheduled as soon as possible, however availability for current/new patients needing only an annual exam, appointment availability starts near the end of November. (The wait list for these appointments is CRAZY!)
